Check this out, it's unmissable

I just got done watching some VERY interesting training videos by
my friend Adam T. substantial hand and thumb strength, to hold very tightly onto the deck whilst tearing simultaneously.

My tip for attempting this feat would be to practice tearing paper initially. For example take 10-20 sheets of A4 and tear them, then put the 2 halves together and form a straight edge with the 2 parts then tear again and so on till you can't get through it. This is superb for warming up the hands and also a good challenge for the grip. Also, pinch gripping weight plates is a good thumb strengthener also.

Be careful to listen to your body and not wreck your thumbs as they take a long time to heal

Laine Snook Millenium Dumbbells

Laine Snook Millenium Dumbbells

Laine Snook is certainly holding up as one of the great grip champs.

Here from Kb Training For Sport

I thought the Inch dumbbell was a real challenge to most Superhumans

Here Laine deadlifts 2 x Millenium dumbbells - incredible!

If I'm not mistaken the Millenium Dumbbell is 2 3/8" diameter and 238lbs

Note also that Laine has pressed overhead the Inver Stone for reps and (unnassisted) lifted the Dinnie Stones. />
Kettlebell flips are another great way to train your grip. Simply swing the kettlebell between your legs as in a normal KB swing and then when the KB is about level with your chest let go and push forward on the kettlebell handle hard enough for it to do a 360 degree turn, let it drop a little bit and then catch it before it hits the floor. Upon catching it swing it between your legs and repeat. This movement can also be passed between hands alternately. Try to vary the height you release the kettlebell.
There is a balance between releasing too high and too low. A high release requires more energy to swing the KB but a low release is harder to catch and more stressing on your reactions.
(see video in side bar for kettlebell flips)

Plates

If you don't have access to weight plates, I would recommend getting hold of some (iron kind). They can be used for all kinds of exercises for developing grip strength. The first exercise I would recommend is the plate curl.
This exercise is a fine developer of the fingers and forearms. I would suggest using a 5kg weight plate initially as it can place a large amount of stress on your fingers if you go too heavy too soon.

Grab hold of the plate and hold it by your side with your thumb facing in the direction that you are looking. Now curl the disc upwards slowly and back down and repeat. Keep curling until you can feel your forearms burning up then change hands and repeat.

The next exercise is the plate pinch grip. Select a plate with smooth sides and pinch grip it from an upright position on the floor. Try to stand up with it by your side. Next add a plate and keep going until you can't pinch grip no more!! Obviously swapping hands. You can also go for singles or keep holding on for time with this one. But be careful just in case you drop the plates on to your feet.

develop grip strength

Let's go for a walk

One of the greatest exercises for grip strength and grip endurance is the farmers walk!
Grab hold of some heavy dumbbell's and set of walking, you'll soon now about is as your forearms feel like they're on fire. Not only is this good for developing grip strength, but it's also an excellent addition to you accumulation of GPP. Kettlebell's, sand bag's, suitcases, bricks you name it! They're all great ways of challenging your grip if it's hard to hold onto for a while and fairly awkward it's gonna develop your grip. As an example, you can deadlift 400lbs with a normal grip, but try putting two towels around the bar to pull on and you will soon find that it's not that that easy and it hits your grip from a totally different angle.

This method for grip advancement can also be used many other ways, you can perform pull ups by hooking the towels over the pull up bar. By attaching the towel through a kettlebell you can perform swings with an alternate grip. With a long sheet you can also perform rotations with the kettlebell around your head which is similar to a hammer wind up. Providing the sheet is thick enough you will most definitely develop grip strength.

Pinch gripping is yet another exercise to add to your exercise arsenal. Pinch gripping weight discs is a fantastic hand developer. Place 2 weight discs back to back (flat sides facing outwards) grab them and lift the discs, hold on as long as your grip will take it!

Pinch grips with both hands at once and try to beat your previous best duration every time you practice this exercise. When developing a grip training program, the key point to remember is recovery time, I cannot emphasise this enough. Recovery, recovery, recovery! You must give yourself plenty of rest, the hand can be easily injured when you throw new demanding exercises at it.

Three days per week should suffice, alternate the exercises trying different combinations. i.e. Monday - gripper work, thick bar swings. Thursday - Towel deadlifts, towel pull ups. Saturday - Thick bar, pinch grip.

Work up to 5 sets of each exercise. Set off at 2 and add a set per week then swap the exercises around or substitute with new ones. Remember you should always be looking for new ways to challenge yourself!

develop grip strength

DEVELOPING GRIP STRENGTH

Developing Grip Strength

Here you're going to learn how developing grip strength can specifically aid your performance in whatever sport you do. My background is in highlan games shot putt and discus throwing where grip strength and developing grip strength is of the utmost important. I have played sport in one form or another for the past 23 years and along the way realized how important it is to develop a strong powerful grip.

Imagine being able to hold onto anything with your strong, vise like hands, be it your opponent in martial arts, your opponent in football, your golf club, the wall your scaling in climbing or anything you simply don' want to let go of fast.

There are many superb devices on the market for training your grip, but there are just as many or more that you can make for yourself with things you find around your home, garden or can buy cheaply enough at your local hardware store.

When anyone mentions 'develop grip strength', the first thing that comes to mind is the sport grippers that can be bought for a dollar or two. Fine if you want to train to open and close something 100 times. They may be good place for someone with a below average grip, but for serious strength of the hand they are near useless when training for power but may have uses for rehab after an injury. The grippers that should become part of your arsenal of equipment are the metal kind that can take anywhere from 80lb to 350lb of force to close. Grippers are great but only make up a part of the training required to develop well rounded strong hands.

Second in my opinion for hand development would be pinch gripping. Imagine taking hold of a brick between your thumb and fingers, the heavier and wider the object you're trying to grip the harder it will be, but be careful with pinch gripping as you can seriously damage your thumb if you over do it. I'm always looking for something to pinch grip barbell plates, bricks, big pieces of wood, thick metal bar, the list is endless........................ always looking for something and trying to work out if I can lift it or not. Also in the pinch grip category and an old secret of old time strong men is the thick barbell or dumbbell. Just think, in real life sport, how often is the thing you're trying to get hold of got a perfectly round surface just like a barbell? Exactly, it hasn't! This is where thick bars come in useful. To buy a thick bar would cost you a small fortune, just scan the web and look for a thick bar, they can set you back anywhere upto $600.

develop grip strength

DEVELOPING GRIP STRENGTH

One of the easiest methods of making a standard bar thicker is very simple and much cheaper than spending a fortune on gear is, simply using a length of carpet (hard backed works better than soft backed).

Cut a length of carpet around 100mm (4") thick and tightly wrap it around a dumbbell or barbell (you'll need to pieces for a barbell) and then tape it on to hold it in place. You can make the bell as thick as you want by using a longer length piece of carpet but I would recommend somewhere between 2-2 1/2" thick would suffice.

Once the handle is made thicker you can substitute the exercises you previously performed with some sets of thick bar stuff. I personally find dumbbell/kettlebell swings to be very challenging to the grip and find warming up for a session with 3-4 sets of 20 swings really works my grip hard.
Another favorite of mine with the thick bar is reverse grip curls and standard barbell curls, this one really sets the men from the boys, you'll find you must drop the poundages by quite a lot to be able to rep out. Bench press is also much more challenging with a thick bar as it opens up the hand quite a lot and challenges you in a way you weren't expecting. The list of exercises are literally endless, use your imagination and you'll find new ways of training.

develop grip strength
